THE INDEX VIEW

Carbon Underwriting is a revealing test of whether better data can turn delegated authority from a periodic reporting relationship into a continuously managed portfolio. The company says premium increased from £150 million in 2023 to £471 million in 2026 and attributes its proposition to Graphene, an in-house ecosystem intended to structure bordereaux, claims, exposure and underwriting information for faster portfolio decisions. Scale makes that thesis more consequential. A system can improve visibility without proving that the underlying selection is superior; the evidence must appear in cohort performance, intervention speed and capital-provider returns. Syndicate 4747’s audited 2024 accounts provide a useful counterweight to company growth messaging. Gross written premium rose to £163.4 million from £92.1 million, while the calendar-year combined ratio moved to 102.7% and the result was a £1.9 million loss. At the same time, the open 2023 and 2024 underwriting years were forecast to produce positive returns on capacity, and the closed 2022 year showed a 5.6% return. Those measures are not contradictory: calendar results and underwriting-year forecasts capture different development periods. They do show why delegated-authority performance should not be reduced to one headline ratio. Carbon’s 2026 growth-equity agreement with FTV Capital is designed to fund Graphene development, deeper AI capability and expansion into the United States. The appointment of a head of U.S. casualty adds long-tail exposure to a proposition investors described as concentrated in lower-volatility SME risk. That is a material strategic change. Data may identify pricing and claims signals earlier, but casualty outcomes still emerge over years, and models cannot shorten the economic tail. Carbon’s governance challenge is therefore to preserve the explainability of portfolio decisions as automation, premium and geography expand together. The useful indicators are loss and reserve development by underwriting year, bordereaux timeliness and data completeness, referral and override rates, remediation speed, coverholder concentration, capital-provider renewal, catastrophe aggregation, U.S. casualty cohort performance, expense ratios and whether growth in Graphene’s data volume produces measurable underwriting advantage rather than only operating efficiency.
