THE INDEX VIEW

Jensten Underwriting is testing a “virtual insurer” model inside a vertically connected UK distribution group. Its five-year Zurich arrangement provides more than £300 million of cross-class property, casualty and motor capacity, giving the MGA longer planning visibility than a sequence of annual renewals. The value of that stability should be measured by more than premium growth. Multi-year capacity can support product investment and consistent broker appetite, but it also concentrates the operating model around a cornerstone provider and increases the importance of portfolio transparency, delegated-authority controls and credible remediation triggers. Jensten combines portal-based products with access to empowered underwriters for bespoke risks. That hybrid model is strategically sensible: automation should lower the cost of straightforward business while human judgment preserves access for risks that do not fit a rigid rules engine. The evidence to watch is whether referrals produce differentiated underwriting rather than merely slower processing, and whether portal rate changes remain linked to claims and exposure evidence. The parent group’s connected-broker strategy adds distribution, London-market placement and scheme-development capabilities. It can generate useful feedback between client demand and product design, but it also creates potential conflicts around internal referrals, remuneration and market choice. Jensten’s published fair-value process—annual product assessment, claims and complaints review, distribution-remuneration scrutiny and target-market monitoring—provides a governance framework; the stronger test is whether those reviews lead to visible product changes or exits when outcomes weaken. The key indicators are loss and reserve development by product and underwriting year, Zurich concentration and renewal economics, portal referral and override rates, broker retention, quote-to-bind conversion, claims and complaint trends, distribution remuneration, internal versus independent broker flow and the speed with which product reviews change appetite or pricing.
